PIV

Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) is an optical method used for flow visualization in fluids. Small particles are mixed into the fluid to help the optical tracking, which allows the user to analyze the particles' displacement, velocity and acceleration within the flow by taking rapid sequences of images. With the help of DIC (Digital Image Correlation), the movement of the particles in the images is precisely tracked. This is crucial in many industries where the fluid flow is important, such as in aerodynamics (helps analyze the flow around objects), fluid dynamics (analysis of turbulent flow) and environmental studies (to help understand natural flows like ocean currents).

Here are the key aspects of PIV in Mercury RT:

PIV Field (Particle Image Velocimetry): The software supports PIV field measurements to visualize and analyze particle flow.

Flow/Motion Field Measurement: Mercury RT can measure motion fields, which are measurements of motion with changing patterns and shapes. This functionality is particularly useful for tracking in-plane particle movement, allowing for precise displacement, velocity, and acceleration measurements.

High-Speed Camera Integration: Mercury RT software supports the integration of high-speed cameras (Phantom, Chronos), which are essential for capturing rapid particle movements in PIV experiments.

Data Analysis and Visualization: The software includes tools for advanced multi-area contour plots for complex analysis, displacement field, and strain field calculations (image above and videos). These help visualize the particle flow and understand the dynamics involved.

Real-Time and Offline Computation: Real-time and offline computation capabilities allow users to record and analyse data later, which is important for PIV experiments where large datasets are generated and need detailed post-processing.
